Oikos was asked by Daewoo Corporation's Construction Division to develop a differentiation strategy to market their housing division. Oikos proposed ecological design and emphasis on creating places for community interaction and participation. The Daewoo Apartments in Kwangju are the pilot project (590 apartments) where Oikos applied and tested the design guidelines we had developed, within the limitation of a low budget for this speculative housing. Post-occupancy evaluations by various researchers revealed a high level of resident satisfaction, and a rise in property value in the market. Kwangju University's botany and ecology students sometimes visit the site to study its abundance of plant species. Oikos' design guidelines are now routinely used for all Daewoo 'Green Apartments' developments in Korea.
