Sangam Housing Area is part of Seoul City's Millennium Town being constructed in conjunction with the 2002 World Cup and Millennium Park landfill reclamation adjacent to the site. The task of the competition was to create a model for sustainable urban high-density housing in the future.
A soft-engineering approach to flood control provides conceptual and spatial integration. Housing, organized around several small community clusters, responds to street and urban grid along the edges, and opens towards an internal boulevard, mountain and lake park.
Buildings provide floor plan variation at the ground and top levels, green vertical connectors and lofts, and use passive solar energy. Sun control is individual for each unit with adjustable louvers, allowing for facade modulation and diversity. Circulation has been separated into safe pedestrian and bicycle path located in the major green corridor encircling the site, and vehicle traffic is minimized by several entrance cluster roads leading directly into the large garage areas.
